Cerknica Lake is the largest intermittent lake in Slovenia, and one of the largest in Europe. Its surface can reach up to 38 km². Its mysterious disappearing and reappearing has inspired many folk tales. On the basis of the research work into the intermittent Cerknica Lake, the polymath J. V. Valvasor (1641-1693) in 1687 became a member of the Royal Society in London.
